D-U-N-S for Apple and Google Play: Who Needs It and What If It Is Delayed?
Do you need a D-U-N-S number to publish on the App Store or Google Play?
A D-U-N-S number is used for legal-entity identification in organization enrollment. Apple generally requires it for organization Developer Program enrollment, while sole proprietors should follow Apple's individual enrollment route. Google Play generally requires it when establishing a non-government organization developer account, subject to Google's stated verification exceptions. Personal accounts have different checks. A D-U-N-S number alone does not establish that your business qualifies as an Apple legal entity.
Which account needs what?
| Platform / account | D-U-N-S | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Apple — individual | Not the organization D-U-N-S gate | Sole proprietors are directed to individual enrollment |
| Apple — organization | Required for legal-entity verification | Trade names / branches alone are not accepted legal entities |
| Google Play — personal | Not the organization D-U-N-S gate | Some newer personal accounts face the 12-testers/14-days production gate |
| Google Play — organization | Generally required | Verify matching legal name, address and organization documents; limited exceptions exist |
Is applying for D-U-N-S free?
Google explicitly says Dun & Bradstreet D-U-N-S requests are free and warns about third parties charging fees. First search whether the legal entity already has a number; use the official enrollment/lookup flow, not an unsolicited paid intermediary.
What if the number has not arrived?
Google says D-U-N-S issuance may take up to about 30 days. Apple advises emailing Dun & Bradstreet if its related application has been processing longer than two weeks, then allowing up to two business days for Apple to receive newly issued D&B data. These are published guidance points, not guaranteed deadlines.
- Check exact legal entity name and address for consistency.
- Keep the request/reference ID and contact D&B through its official support route.
- Do not pay for expedited promises without independently verifying the service.
What if Apple says the business is not a legal entity?
A D-U-N-S number may exist for a sole proprietor or other business form that Apple's organization enrollment does not accept as a separate legal entity. Apple's instructions say sole proprietorship/single-person businesses should enroll as individuals. Check your actual legal status rather than assuming that any tax registration makes an eligible organization.
Can you avoid D-U-N-S by switching accounts?
Do not assume that changing account types is free of implications. Public seller names, verification, account ownership, transfers, tax/legal obligations and Google Play production gating can differ. Google's alternative route applies only in specified exceptional situations such as unsupported D&B regions or recognized government accounts; it is not a universal bypass.
